About

SubRosa is an anarchist community space run by a collective of committed people (mostly) from the Santa Cruz County area, freely giving off our energy and time.

We put our energy into SubRosa to create a vibrant environment, available for events, classes and meetings, collaborations and organizing, art and creativity, as well as reading and studying.  We offer a selection of radical books and magazines and other swag - for sale and by donation. And check out the Anarchist Lending Library - featuring books on anarchy, Situationists, history, politics, ecology, indigenous studies, feminism and psychology and more, that might not be available in the local library.  SubRosa also features a variety of events! Learn more at “Events” page of this website http://www.subrosaproject.org/p/events.html

This is a space to meet people, share resources and ideas, challenge our assumptions and act on our passions.

As anti-authoritarian space, we strive to create an environment where people are empowered to have interactions based on self-responsibility, mutual respect and free association.  We want to create a welcoming space for others who share the goals of diverse community, respect for all forms of life, and freedom from coercive relationships, to foster an environment free from sexism, queer&homophobia, racism, able-ism and other forms of hierarchy.  Let’s create together the world(s) we want to live in now.

And members of the SubRosa collective have revived a not entirely new, not all too different version of Free Skool Santa Cruz  – a project in mutual aid learning and sharing. Sessions are spring through early autumn.

Location

Over 15 years ago hard working folks transformed a run-down retail space and bleak parking lot on lower Pacific into a cozy community and performance space with a large patio surrounded by a beautiful garden. Inside and outside, people would gather around small tables for coffee and conversation, reading, talking, meeting, and enjoying performances and art. Free wi-fi is also available for use. Now SubRosa primarily operates as an event space, with a variety of radical community events - music, meetings, film screenings, benefits, Free Skool Santa Cruz classes, monthly Really Really Free Market and much more! SubRosa and the Hub Community Center, are located in downtown Santa Cruz, CA which is the unceded homelands of the Awaswas-speaking Ohlone people known as the Uypi, who stewarded these lands since time immemorial. Centuries of colonial violence led to the removal and displacement of the Uypi. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma.

This acknowledgement is not an end but is part of an ongoing process of engagement, with the legacy of colonialism, with critically examining and acting to challenge the ways this is still present systemically and how this impacts us as individuals and the land in a variety of ways.

Who We Are

While SubRosa collective members are drawn from a broad community of supporters, the collective has also been composed of some of the same people who brought Free Skool Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In, and the Last Night DIY Parade to Santa Cruz. Members of the long-extinct performance space What Is Art? are part of the effort. These are people you already know in Santa Cruz, people involved in local art, politics, community and DIY events for years and years.

As the project is now over 15 years there have also been plenty of new folks in the collective as people come and go.  This includes folks recently to town and others that have been around and are now interested in being part of a public radical community project, like SubRosa.
